“JAN 59”
The house we rented November 1, 1958 on the Brunswick Road in Gardiner, Maine when I turned 10.. The “Woodie” station wagon. There was a garden beyond the garage which I had to weed after school.
We had mom’s horse, sheep, and other animals in the barn to the right of the photo. I had to carry two 5 gallon buckets of water to them in the winter as the water line froze. I also carried two 100 pound bags of grain at a time down to them.
Dad put in several honey bee hives to get the honey. Dad was stung one too many times and almost died. Mom got him to the hospital – the doctor said that if she had been 15 minutes later dad would have been dead.
We walked down the road to the left a ways to a dairy farm where we got 9 quarts of milk – still warm from the cows. We churned some of the cream into butter.
Mom had as many as 20 kids all day in her day care center. She also had a “Lollypop” shop she ran out of the house where she made chocolates as well as other candies.
We left here to go on 10 mile hikes to prepare us for the upcoming 50 mile hike dad had planned. I got my camping and hiking merit badges during the hike which helped me get my Eagle rank in Boy Scouts.
Behind the camera was the shelter where I cleaned and shoveled snow so kids could wait for the bus there. I sold Grit magazine to homes around. We had no TV at first, but listened to the radio. Susan’s note “( and we did have a black and white TV there; I remember sneaking in some American Bandstand with Dick Clark). I was 10 when we moved in and 15 when we moved out.
