We went kayaking up the Hillsborough River yesterday. We had done Run #2 before, yesterday we did Run #4 – 5 miles. We still have Runs 1, 3, and 5 to go!

My picture was in the paper today:

I did not know that they took this picture of me looking up at one of the bodies!

I went to MOSI today to see the controversial BODIES display. Quite a show!!!! ( I was warned not to take pictures, so these were taken surreptitiously – they had people watching at every turn to make sure no pictures were taken, so I had to hide in corners or in behind people!). There were 200 exhibits there, so this is just a very small sample. I wanted to take pictures in the lung exhibit

The skeleton on the right, the muscles on the left – same person!

Checking out the skull – and the bones in the ear, the stirrup looks just like one!

The human body and all of the systems – check out that spinal collumn!

The blood vessels, and only the blood vessels.

How the lungs look for a smoker and a non-smoker was very interesting in this room!!

A split personality!

All diced up.

I went to a job interview this morning, then came home to find that one Gulf Fritillary butterfly had come out!

Then I noticed in the paper that Dale Chihuly was coming here to give autographs! I went down and listened to him speak and got his autograph on a book.

Below are a few pictures of his work:

My slide show of his work is still available:

We spent the weekend visiting relatives.

The variegated hibiscus:

The water pump at Jackman?

A new chrysalis just completed this morning:

When you touch it, it pulls to the side!

We have a star in our family: note from Donald:

Hi John,
Stephen is staying with his Mom in Florida until Tuesday when he will be going to visit a friend in Seattle for a week before school starts for him back here in CA. Stephanie is in Pennsylvania. She split the drive from LA with her friend April who is returning to U Penn. They’ll be visiting New York and then she’ll fly back to LA on Wednesday. I’m doing fine at work and splitting my spare time between flying and working on my ‘proof-of-concept’ transportation system, which is coming along fine.
Stephanie has had more promotional work lately and had some shots made for her modeling portfolio. This type of work pays well and will help her through the next last year of college (she’s getting her degree in June). Here are my favorite shots from that photo shoot.

We had two babies this morning!!! Two beautiful Black Swallowtail butterflies!!

Notice the dual proboscis! They start out with it dual, but then it grows together to form a tube.

Detail of the body and wing:

Quite a sight! The wings are not yet fully inflated:

More detail; of the wing:

Awesome!

Note from Jean!

This past weekend  Julie (my sister in law) and I went blueberry picking.
We had a wonderful time and picked four plus gallons of blueberries.

Note the blueberry stains on Julie’s knees!  I was a wimp and brought a low stool
to sit on.   We have had muffins, pie and today I made blueberry jam!

Jean

I went out to see the Gulf Frit’s this morning, they were gone! Then I saw their chrysalis’s!

They two have dual horns on the end, but they hang upside down, like the monarchs.

They are pretty angular, and the stubby feet still show!

And a fourth baby showed up!

A slow day:

The passion vine is flowering again.

The “horns” on the Black Swallowtail chrysalis.

August 7, 2005

We went kayaking on the Alafia River today! It was a fast running river – about 5 knots in places.

Above it was about 1 knot – below about 5 knots!

Real Class 1 rapids, in Florida!

And back to placid again

Above is the one bird we saw, but we saw about 50 butterflies!!

August 6, 2005

Pam found a weed, broke off a foot, then stuck it in some soil in this pot. It dwindled down and died, I thought. Then a few months later it started to grow! Then this morning we saw Gulf Fritallary caterpillers on it!

Number 1 below:

Number 2 below:

Number 1 munching on a leaf:

Number 3, a baby!

Number 2 munching on his leaf:

And a lizard Pam saw mating under one of our pots (but I disturbed trying to get a picture):

Nope, ..I really don’t see a pattern here to justify profiling, do
you? So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly
fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no
longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random
searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper
identification, secret agents who are members of the
President’s security detail, 85-year old Congressmen
with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning and
former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim Males
between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty
of profiling.

As the writer of the
award winning story “Forrest Gump” so aptly put it,
“Stupid is as stupid does.”

Come on people wake up!!!

And guess who just bombed London?

August 4, 2005

I guess I caught them just in time!

I got in from sailing with Jim today and saw this fellow anchored using his own web like a telephone pole climber!

I did not know it but he was changing already, his lower two sets of  “feet” were already pulled up inside.

With flash.

As I was playing with my photos, he turned into a chrysalis!! The time between the above picture and the one before was 14 minutes! Next time I will not leave!

No flash.

The topmost point is actually two points, like little horns. I will try to get a picture of them tomorrow.

A video someone else made:

When we got home I noticed five caterpillars in the parsley!!!! According to Amy’s book they are going to be black swallowtails!!

Four of the five are visible above.

Their normal state above.

Notice the spikes coming out when disturbed!

When you pick them up they extend these little scent cups and try to rub it on you! The cups are:

Ostemeria, a small forked organ like a deep orange pair of soft horns, protrude from the first segment behind the head and emit a pungent smell.

A good picture of a buckeye taking a drink of nectar.

August 1, 2005

We are over here in Daytona Beach enjoying the sunshine. Pam’s daughter Natalie got married yesterday. Pam and Natalie did the whole thing themselves!! And it was quite the wedding!
