Samuel III was a Lt. Commander in the US Naval Reserve and was a mechanical engineer who designed submarines. Some of the family spent time in Turkey while Samuel did a liaison tour there. Lillian and Sam were honored with the Fabyan Drake Award. Also of note, they sold a Revolutionary War-era journal in 2000 for a record amount. They had seven kids Lillian (Ann), Jo Nancy (Jo), Marcia, Deborah (Debby), Samuel (Bo), Errica,  Kristen (Krickett)

Samuel Crowell III, 89
     ELIOT — Samuel Crowell III, 89, of Goodwin Road in Eliot, died on Oct. 11, 2006, at his home.
    Born in Boston, Mass., Feb. 24, 1917, he was a son of Samuel and Helen (Josselyn) Crowell. . He graduated from Thayer Academy in Braintree in 1935. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. A 2nd lieutenant, infantry, in the R.O.T.C. he transferred to the U.S. Navy Reserves. He attended graduate school at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1941, then was sent to Portsmouth.
     In 1942, he was attached to Amphibious Forces- Norfolk, Va. As Lieutenant J.G. he and a Lieutenant wrote a training book for L.C.I.s, and oversaw the barracks for training crews at Passion Point, Md. He was assigned to Galveston, Texas, as deck officer on a L.T.C. He returned to Norfolk and then on to San Diego where he oversaw the conversion of a liner into a troop transport. In 1944, he attended guard school and then was sent to the Panama Canal Zone.
     On V.J. Day, he was promoted to Lt. Commander. Assigned to Stockton, Calif., to mothball A.P.A’s, he went on inactive duty in 1946. In 1951, he was reactivated during the Korean War at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard as ship superintendent, where he worked on the Aircraft Carrier Bennington.
     Between wars he worked for Stone and Webster of Richmond, Va.
     After the Korean War he worked as a civilian at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, from 1954 until retirement in 1976. He remained in the Naval Reserve until after the Viet Nam War.
     Samuel was a member of the Eliot United Methodist Church for 50 years. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 years. He founded the Farmers market in town and set up faithfully every Saturday from Memorial Day until the September town festival for 18 years.
     Sam was a member of the John F. Hill Grange, the York Pomona Grange, and the State Grange. He was a member of the Eliot Historical Society, Eliot Police Boosters, and the Republican Party. With the Grange he worked on the Acton Fair Grounds committee, beauty pageant and the Grange concession booth .
     In Virginia, Sam served as a volunteer fireman. Samuel donated blood over 800 times amounting to over 100 gallons while at the Navy Yard.
     Sam headed up the Eliot Festival Day Art Show for 15 years.
     He is survived by his loving wife Lillian Roberta (Herrick) of Eliot; daughter Ann-Lillian Schell of Kasilof, Alaska, daughter JoNancy and her husband the Rev. Carleton Gunn of Sanford, daughter Marcia and her husband Bruce Violante of Lakeville, Mass., daughter Deborah and her husband Steven Berthiaume of Eliot, son Samuel Crowell IV and his wife Elizabeth of Seabrook, Texas, daughter Errica and her husband Richard Stevens of Raleigh , N.C., and a daughter Kristen and her husband Patrick D. Merrill of Eliot; 21 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind devoted caregivers and friends from Visiting Nurses of So. Maine and Hospice of So. Maine, especially Mark, Doris, Janice and Caroline.
     A funeral will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at 3 p.m. at his church, the Eliot United Methodist Church on Rte 236 in Eliot. Friends may visit with his family on Monday from 6-8 p.m., at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road Kittery. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
    In lieu of flowers, donations of life giving blood may be made in his memory, or donations to the veterans organization of your choice.
