Pipevine yesterday:                                                  and today:

On my trip from work to my presentation practice I was a little late because I saw the following:

About 20 manatees:

Picture of one of the suitors nuzzling the object of all their attention:

Imagine this one ton lady, with all those guys stirring up the water around her! Quite a sight! I hear it made the news tonight but I did not get to see it on TV; I saw it in person!

These flowers are about 1/4 inch in diameter!

This evening I was checking my monarch caterpillars when I decided to check the pipevine…WOW

The pipevine swallowtail caterpillar had grown! Pam had picked out the plant because it had a tiny tiny speck of a caterpillar, now it is huge, at least two inches long!

This is why they call the plant a pipevine, the flower looks like a pipe:

Friday I had to go to Honeymoon Island; two of the State’s buildings are being threatened by erosion.

Then we went to see where they wanted the buildings moved. I came across this little guy (girl?) protecting her tiny eggs from the sun:

I came up to Pam’s yesterday; Pam’s daughter Natalie was due to come visit. I then went out into the back yard by the pond to watch the birds. First I took pictures of one, then a second, juvenile Marsh Hens (gallinules).

A few minutes later mom and dad Marsh Hen saw that I was on the shore by their little ones. Mom came swimming across the pond and stopped on the left side of the reeds. Dad went over to the right side, out of sight. Mom preened herself for a while, then said “cluck” very softly. The two in front of me started back into the reeds. Mom clucked softly every 30 seconds or so. Then all four little ones made their way through the reeds and met up with mom!

Mom and two of the four little ones that came out of the reeds.

They stayed there a while, pecking at the duckweed and enjoying themselves, when, dad spoke up. He called out and all the chicks and mom took off to where he was!! It was quite an episode!

This afternoon I had to go to Treasure Island Yacht and Tennis Club (I have to give a presentation there tomorrow). Their clubhouse is sinking and falling apart. I was taking pictures of the site when I saw this Green-backed Heron on a float:

He was preening; with his wing over his head he looked like he had a parasol!

He then flew over to one of the lines which held the float:

Looking for a fish to grab, and eat.

Soon a snowy egret flew over and landed between me and the heron (scaring the heron away), then he turned to look over his shoulder and seemed almost to say to me, “Now take my picture.”

Note from Paul:

Arrived Curacao yesterday.  Sailed to a couple of new places on the way here from Margarita… Cubagua – cold water, nice beach.  Is. Tortuga at Playa Caldera, the finest beach in the world.  Totally desolate with clear water and perfect beach. also near Tortuga is Cayo Herradura, again with a perfect beach.. These places are desert with NO hotels, restaurants, nada, nichts, nuttin, just a few fish shacks, basically lean to’s.  Stopped overnight at Dos Mosquises in the Los Roques archipelago, perfect water. Hooked and boated a 20 pound Blackfin Tuna.  Gave him to a couple of Italian guys. We are in the true trade wind belt now sailing downwind in 20 kts of breeze with seas astern to 10′.  We made two overnight passages averaging 6 kts both times.  About 2-5 am the wind goes light or we would make even better time than that.  We are well, and will stay here a week or two.

Love and Peace
