My Engineering Jobs

My first engineering job

My first engineering job was in the summer of 1968, I was employed by Paulsen Associates in Essex Junction, Vermont.

We had an appartment in Burlington and I drove my 750 Norton motorcycle 100 miles per hour to Esses to work every morning. One morning I entered a round about at the same time as a car did, I had to go very close to the granite curb in the middle, so close that I ripped off the entire side of my leather shoe. Another time when I accellerated turning left in front of oncoming cars (I did not want to wait, I could turn left in front of them faster than they could start when the light turned green) my drive chain snapped. I made it across and a short way up the hill before the motorcycle stopped.

That summer I was drawing up the plans for the water supply for the Essex area. Champlain Water District had me draw the plans. I also rowed out into Lake Champlain every day to the spot where the water was to be drawn from. I lowered glass bottles to several depths (about 75 feet down) to sample the water. I then added chemicals to the water to stabilize the oxygen content and brought the samples to shore.
I worked for Paulson Associates developing the original plans for the water supply.

I worked there in the summer of 1969 as well, but instead of paying for aa appartment we bought a tent and lived in it all summer. I took pallets and laid a matterss on them. We had a water spigot on the cornr of our lot where I went every morning to brush my teeth and get water to cook breakfat over the fire. We only had a dollar a day for food, so a pound of hotdogs at one dollr had to go a long way. Cooking a hotdog over a wood fire for dinner was our usual meal. Marshmallow toasted over the fire for desert.

Paulsen Asociates did not need me in 1970 so I ended up doing a lot of odd jobs. One job was replacing the roof covering of a house in New York.
