  Why do kamikaze’s wear helmets?

Only in America……can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in America……are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink.

Only in America……do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in America……do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.

Only in America……do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Only in America……do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

Only in America……do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won’t miss a call from someone we didn’t want to talk to in the first place.

Only in America……do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

Only in America……do we use the word ‘politics’ to describe the process so well: ‘Poli’ in Latin meaning ‘many’ and ‘tics’ meaning ‘bloodsucking creatures’.

Only in America……do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

EVER WONDER ….

OK, is the following a myth or real?

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONEMany people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without letup until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm.

In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

Dr. Bohan says the best course of action for a typical heart attack victim is to immediately take an aspirin (which helps dissolve blood clots) and call 911.

Friday night Pam and I went to see the Chihuly exhibit with the Marly Group. Here are some pictures I took of his glass sculptures:

And his glass ceiling:

Details of the glass ceiling:

He has 200 exhibits across the world!

Saturday I played chess with Jim and then Pam and I watched “Sixth Sense”. Quite a movie!

Today (Sunday) we walked over to the S. Pasadena butterfly garden and brought back a caterpillar for my porch garden:

Sitting here waiting for David’s plane to come from the frozen north. It is interesting seeing those coming through the door. The ones from the north with heavy coats, those from here with shorts and short sleeve shirts! We plan to go out to eat, maybe to Crazy Buffet. I have never been there but the write up says that they have 50 items on the sushi bar and a huge bar for everything else!

January 20, 2004

Had a nice weekend, played chess with Jim on Saturday, went to Zephyrhills to see a client about moving a  caboose and a “Presidential” railroad car to his property about 10 miles away.

On Sunday Pam and I went to Wall Springs where we hope to get a contract with Pinellas County to further develop the land.

The old swimming pond^.

The spring itself. Here was where, from 1920 to 1960 people used to come to the fresh water “Health Spring” to swim.

I had a nice weekend, Pam and I spent it together. We took down my tree for another year. We went out for a ride checking out the neighborhood. We went to church last night, they had a baptism of 93 at her church (her niece was one).

Sue and Al sent this (I posted it before, but it deserves repetition):

Subject: Shoe Bomber

Remember the guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe and tried to light it?  Did you know his trial is over?

Did you know he was sentenced?  Everyone should hear what the judge had to say.

Ruling by Judge William Young U.S.  District Court

Prior to sentencing, the Judge asked the defendant if he had anything to say.  His response: After admitting his guilt to the court for the record, Reid also admitted his “allegiance to Osama bin Laden, to Islam, and to the religion of Allah” defiantly stated, “I think I ought not apologize for my actions” and told the court, “I am at war with your country.”

Judge Young then delivered the statement quoted below, a stinging condemnation of Reid in particular and terrorists in general.

January 30, 2003, United States vs.  Reid.

Judge Young:

“Mr.  Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the Court imposes upon you.  On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to life in prison in the custody of the United States Attorney General.  On counts 2, 3, 4 and 7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the sentence on each count to run consecutive with the other.  That’s 80 years.  On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years consecutive to the 80 years just imposed.  The Court imposes upon you each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000 for the aggregate fine of $2 million.  The Court accepts the government’s recommendation with respect to restitution and orders restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to American Airlines.  The Court imposes upon you the $800 special assessment.

The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because the law requires it.  But the life sentences are real life sentences so I need go no further.  This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes.  It is a fair and just sentence.  It is a righteous sentence.

Let me explain this to you.  We are not afraid of you or any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid.  We are Americans.  We have been through the fire before.  There is all too much war talk here.  And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect.  Here in this court, where we deal with individuals as individuals, and care for individuals as individuals.

As human beings, we reach out for justice.  You are not an enemy combatant.  You are a terrorist.  You are not a soldier in any war.  You are a terrorist.  To give you that reference, to call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature.  Whether it is the officers of government who do it or your attorney who does it, or that happens to be your view, you are a terrorist.  And we do not negotiate with terrorists.  We do not treat with terrorists.  We do not sign documents with terrorists.  We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice.

So war talk is way out of line in this court.  You are a big fellow.  But you are not that big.  You’re no warrior.  I know warriors.  You are a terrorist.  A species of criminal guilty of multiple attempted murders.  In a very real sense, State Trooper Santiago had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and where the TV crews were, and he said you’re no big deal.  You’re no big deal.

What your counsel, what your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific.  What was it that led you here to this courtroom today?  I have listened respectfully to what you have to say.  And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty and admit you are guilty of doing.  And I have an answer for you.  It may not satisfy you.  But as I search this entire record, it comes as close to understanding as I know.  It seems to me you hate the one thing that is most precious.  You hate our freedom.  Our individual freedom.  Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose.

Here, in this society, the very winds carry freedom.  They carry it everywhere from sea to shining sea.  It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom.  So that everyone can see, truly see that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely.  It is for freedom’s sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf and have filed appeals, will go on in their representation of you before other judges.  We are about it.  Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr.  Reid, is the measure of our own liberties.

Make no mistake though.  It is yet true that we will bare any burden, pay any price, to preserve our freedoms.  Look around this courtroom.  Mark it well.  The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here.  Day after tomorrow it will be forgotten.  But this, however, will long endure.

Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America, the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice, justice, not war, individual justice is in fact being done.

The very President of the United States, through his officers, will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged, and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice.

See that flag, Mr.  Reid?

That’s the flag of the United States of America.  That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten.  That flag stands for freedom.  You know it always will.”

“Custody Officer.  Stand him down.”

So, how much of this Judge’s comments did we hear on our TV sets?  We need more judges like Judge Young, but that’s another subject.

Pass this around.  Everyone should and needs to hear what this fine judge had to say.  Powerful words that strike home….

Thanks to Amy and Darren, I have the new version of Microsoft WORD (Office 2003), now I can look up words over the internet without leaving the document!

OK, I made a spelling boo-boo. Amy caught it. I had done thesaurus check on chrysallis but chrysalis is the correct spelling – I guess the thesaurus realized I had misspelled it and gave me the alternate words anyway

I think the chrysalis is the whole thing – a pupa (the insect at the stage between a larva and an adult) inside a cocoon or case.

chrys·a·lis (noun) [krissəliss]
1. insect between larva and adult
an insect at the stage of changing from larva to adult, during which it is inactive and encased in a hard cocoon

2. insect cocoon
the hard cocoon that protects a butterfly, moth, or other pupa during its change from larva to adult

Note from Jim and Michelle:Hello.  I am not sure if Jim has written to you in awhile, so I thought I would send you a little note.  Thank you for sending the wonderful citrus fruit.  A little bit of sunshine is always appreciated in chilly New England.  We hope your holiday was a happy and safe one.  We enjoyed our holiday with a little traveling and some quality family togetherness.  This last year has been a full and busy one.  I am still working at making Creative Memories a successful home business.  Jim is enjoying his job at Polychromic.  For now they are still located in Woburn, Mass but will be moving soon to the Andover area  Travel time will be about the same.  The kids are very busy.  Corbin goes to pre-school three days a week while Camryn and I run errands or go the gym.  We have been doing some home improvements as well.  It seems as thought, once you own your own house, there is always and improvement to be made here or there.Hope all is well and that you are happy and healthy.  Take care.Love The Herricks Michelle Herrick
