WOW, a note from Tracey, we have a new addition to the family!!!!

Hi Uncle John,

Just a quick note to make our formal Herrick page announcement about our
newest addition!  On May 15, Zoe Aliza Paxton, weighing 7 lbs 11 oz, was
born at 11:29 am.  I went into labor on May 14 (my due date!) in the
evening and labored throughout the night.  In the morning a nurse made the
surprising discovery that she was breech, so she was delivered a short
while later by Cesarean.  Conveniently for us it was a pretty quick
process, because the operating team was already assembled — having just
performed another surprise C-section!

We are now at home, and I’m recovering quickly from the surgery.  Zoe is
healthy and doing well, and we are seeing changes in her already.  I’ve
attached a few photos to show off our beautiful little girl!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the family reunion in July!

How time flies! We went to Disney last weekend, I had an interview on Monday and a second on Tuesday, Wednesday I put together a slide show for Natalie and Chris for their wedding. Today I am starting another course for RedVector on Bridge Inspection. I just saw one of the Yellow Crowned Night Heron in the back displaying to a female! That was interesting!

I went around and took a picture of him from his other side:

On my way around I took this picture:

Butterflies 3 and 4 of the six we have been keeping hatched this morning:

Flowers around the house that Pam has been keeping healthy:

Pictures from Disney:

Pam’s Dunedin Highlander Band played at Disney, that is why we were there:

You will remember the flowers I got for Pam on Mother’s Day (see May 8 below).
The flowers were delivered on Thursday the 5th. Today, almost two weeks later, the flowers have not quit!

Four blossoms still beautiful (out on out porch):

I got a job offer yesterday, then he called today and offered me $10,000 more! I am still waiting for the right job however. Not bad for being out of work two days though!

More flowers on the porch (Pam has a great way with flowers!):

This one is cute:

Mail from Jim:

Corbin had a great birthday.  He got a new shirt and went to lunch with his family.  He bit into the chicken strip on a stick and got his first loose tooth.  He is very excited and anxious for it to come out.  An amazing day for him.  {plus he got 3 good hits at his t-ball game.  Speaking of t-ball, he is doing a fundraiser this Saturday.  Each player has to raise a minimum of $25.  If you would like to sponsor Corbin for his bat-a-thon, let us know.  You can pledge a flat amount, or by point (1pt. for a single, 2pts. For a double, 3pts. For a triple and 4 pts. For a homerun)  I’m not sure how that works for t-ball but it should be fun to watch.  Hope all is well with all of you.  Take care

Can’t say my life is boring, I am now searching for work again, lost my job on Friday. Keith said that he had been using his own money to keep the business afloat, he had not paid himself or his wife in three months. He had to trim back, and I was it.

We went kayaking today, we went over to ‘our’ island:

An osprey, and two wild parakeets got into the picture!:

Pam, looking for trash to pick up:

On the way out we saw a dolphin, on the way back we saw a number of manatees:

We had a great time!

Saturday I ran the electricity for the microwave oven, fan and light over the stove. Quite a feat as the cabinets had to be taken down and the electric wires run behind them in the walls. I then built a support for the micro, Pam helped a lot in getting the heavy things up and in place!! It looks like nothing happened, yet it was all torn down Saturday morning!

Hi John,

Everything is fine out here on the left coast. The weather has been rainier than usual here in northern CA so the grass and flowers are just beautiful. The weather hasn’t cooperated much for hang-gliding this year, but I go as often as I can. I’m still working on my prototype transportation system and my track at the ranch and the prototype car are coming along slowly as other distractions and commitments intervene. I’ll send more pictures of the project soon.
Stephanie is doing very well in LA. She is concentrating on her classes and expects to graduate next June. Currently she is first in all of her classes except one. She works weekends as a spokesmodel. She writes for the college newspaper, the Sundial (http://www.sundial.csun.edu and search on “Stephanie” to see her articles).
As I mentioned in my last note, Stephanie has started on her new endeavor. She has always been interested in the legal profession and would like to be a lawyer. As a step in that direction she has started a certification course at UCLA to be a paralegal. She should have her paralegal certificate before she graduates next June. Wish her luck.
Stephen is also doing well. He is making more friends and had a computer “LAN party” this weekend. His grades are improving as well as he gets into the swing of the very different school system here in CA.
Stephen is preparing for his college applications which must be in by November. He has visited four campuses (Calif State University Northridge, San Jose State University, San Francisco State University and University of California Santa Cruz) and is choosing another one to visit. So far I think his preference is UCSC, which is only a 40 minute drive from here. I expect that he will live on campus as a freshman.
Here are a couple of fun links:
The first reminded me of your YES bridge-building activity. This is a web site with pictures of bridges and other objects made by stacking pennies and other coins. It’s pretty amazing:
http://www.fincher.org/Misc/Pennies/

The second is an aviation-related (sort of) site. It is a Flash game or demo. You control a formation of F/A 18 jets. By maneuvering your “stick” (mouse) you can make lots of designs with the contrails of the jets. Be sure to try the options including changing formations and changing camera angles.

We are all looking forward to the family get-together in July. See you there.
