October 31, 1997 update

Denise’s kids at the hospital trick or treating:

Trick or Treat!

We spent the evening at Tyrone Mall, there must have been a thousand trick or treater’s all circling the inside of the mall!

Thanks for the birthday card Mom H. The office gave me a birthday party today! The boss purchased breakfast for everyone and we all took out an hour to eat and swap stories! They got me a load of snacks for a gift, then all came in to have some during the day!

October is over already! The holiday season is upon us!

This week has gone fast as well, Denise has recovered from her all-nighter and my boss is returning after a week away. I have a pile of things I have accomplished to show him!
Both Denise and I are in shock with the verdict of guilty for the British nanny. We have been watching snatches of court TV and were convinced of her innocence. Her cries at the verdict were heart rending.
Another thank you is in order, Mom H. for the fudge!

October 28, 1997 (update)

Today was a good day but tonight has turned out differently! Denise called me at work and said that she would be late getting home tonight, so I worked an hour late myself. When I got home, Denise had already been home long enough to eat! She said she was already heading back to work! She stayed long enough to enjoy the first time we lit a fire in our fireplace! She then got about ten calls on her beeper and disappeared. My impression was that some of the team were going out to get a heart and then after midnight they were to transplant it! She has been home, awake, all of 2 hours so far this week!

I installed Visual Basic (Professional Edition) and Microsoft Project tonight. Two programs I will have endless hours of fun with! I also have Office Developer’s Kit to play with…… Anyone need an app I can create? Anyone have an app I can play with?

Also from Canada:

Hello everyone !

I’m back in Montreal, and let me tell you …it’s freezing ! As of
today, we are expecting a snowstorm !  According to «Mister Meteo» this
storm will start during the night of Sunday and we will have this bad
temperature for all day Monday.  We are expecting 10 inches of snow !
Can you imagine, switching from Bermuda to winter coats in 24 hours !

Mom and Dad are find.  They are in Morin Heights.  They told me that
they had snow during the week.

Once again, thank you for everything, your hospitality and your
generosity.

Love,
Martine

And from Al in Vermont:

Hello everyone,

We have slopped the hogs, petted the dogs, counted the
chickens, collected the cackle berries ( two green ones, no ham)
shoveled the stuff, et supper, filled the stove, done the dishes, and it
is Friday night! How lucky we are to be here in the thriving metropolis
of Guildhall, Vermont. You laugh, I bet most you don’t have as much snow
as we do and you don’t have your wood furnace going because it’s 20
degrees outside. Just think what you are missing. All seems to be well
here, we’ll let you know for sure in the spring when we thaw out.

How time flies, I spent the first of the week in an old trailer in the woods over a mile from all those people having a good time at Disney. Nights were spent in a hotel room overlooking a deck of air conditioners, humming all night. I was so glad to get home!! Unfortunately Denise had come home sick from work Wednesday noon but she finally is coming around! We may have another job at work, for a contractor that built two boat trailers for the Navy.

We turned the air conditioner back on today when Mom and Dad L. and Martine came by. Dad L. and I split four games of cribbage while they were here.

Called Mom and Dad H. We will be going up to see them tomorrow, also called Dan but he was back to work tonight! Guess the broken ribs aren’t going to keep him down!

Thanks for the mail while I was gone, Mom H., Al, Don, and Allan L. etc.

This was given to me at work yesterday:

October 19, 1997
We had a great sail to Mom and Dad L’s this weekend, we left Friday and returned this afternoon (Sunday). When we got to their home (actually more than a half mile off shore as the water is too shallow ) we called and told them we were there. Then Saturday morning we expected Dad L. to come wake us up in his power boat and take us in. At 10:30 he had not arrived ( I guessed that the tide was out too far and he could not get out – as it proved to be the case). So Denise decided to swim in! I blew up our raft and Denise hung on and swam while I paddled in. They had gone off to get Martine at the airport. Here is Martine, Denise’s Canadian cousin who sailed up with us!!!!

C’etait pour moi mon bapteme en mer. Quelle merveilleuse experience. Merci a John et Denise pour cette belle journee.
(It was for me, my first experience at sea.  What a wonderful experience.   Thanks to John and Denise for this unforgettable day.)

This was a great day, and Martine will spend the night too! We got to sail part way home but the wind was out of the northwest again and that is the way we needed to go. Denise’s parents will be up to visit tomorrow. I will not be here as I am off to Orlando for the next three days on our next job. It is for a company that did work on the Boardwalk for Disney and is a very big job for me (about 27 weeks of work!) I will be doing the research and meet with the attorney for the three days and bring a mountain of paper back with me.

The weekend is gone!! We did not make it out of the marina! Saturday morning we were still recovering and spent the morning at the swap meet here at the marina. Met and talked with a lot of friends, then asked Frank and Carol to come over, Frank wanted to make it 6 PM so we agreed, no sailing Sat, but we knew we could always go Sunday.
We decided to go to Penney’s to see what Thursday’s leftover/broken shipment (from the SE) had brought. We found a great dining and entertainment set. We put in an offer on it but will not know till Monday. Then 6PM came and no Frank and Carol. I called Tom and Jonie as we had dinner cooked, they were happy to come over! We had a great party, Denise however got sick later on and today, Sunday, she stayed abed all day. She was in no shape to go on a rocking and rolling ship!!
My e-mail is not working (my provider is down), so hope all can read this!!

Super weather, no AC needed!

October 10, 1997(update)

I finished getting the computer back together 21 hours ago (1AM), then went in (5AM)and updated our laptop at work so Dave could use it this weekend. I worked until 1PM then got Denise (at work) to go with me for lunch. We then both came home (after Denise going back for an hour more of work) and were planning to sail out of here! The tide was not in our favor though. Low tide means we cannot sail. We can leave in the morning however, if we have recovered enough!

We have been receiving about 10 magazines recently, anyone know where they are coming from? They are excellent magazines, thanks to whomever sent them! I saw an interesting article in one that explained how bees tell each other where the pollen is! Will scan it and put it on the page (not now though, must get some rest!)

Roger Bansemer tells me that Mitchner has decided to not go through dialyses anymore, he talked with him recently.

October 10, 1997

My computer went down, I had downloaded a screen saver and used it. Then the screen saver did not reappear. I tried to click on properties|screensaver but got a message that an page fault error was made, tried to re boot but same error occurred before Windows could become active . Even tried to uninstall IE4.0 with the help of phone call to Microsoft ($35 per incident) but the IEREMOVE command they gave me did not work. Had to reinstall Windows 95 (three times because the same error crept back in – IExplore.exe cause page fault) until I deleted all the system files in windows. Then I had to install IE4.0 twice – it gave me an error stating that I had to reinstall Windows the first time (it was lacking explorer.exe). I am glad I had all my disks for my video and sound cards!

It is good to be up and running again!!

Lost the access to Wordperfect and need to find that though. All else is fine.

Anyway, newsgroup “news.sprintans.net” has a newsgroup “pdaxs.jobs.engineering” that has 179 entries, mostly in your area. Good luck!

Thanks for the note Darrell!

October 7, 1997

We had a quiet weekend and got some needed rest. On Friday I heard that VP Gore was in town to give St. Petersburg the money for the project we hope to get!! My boss Dave says we will be opening an office here if we get the work. I probably will not be situated here though, Dave is too happy with the way I operate the office and keep everything working there.

Tonight I got home and the AC had quit again, called the service and they said one of us has to be home all day whenever we want them to come by, they will not give us a time they will be here, nor even AM or PM! It is a good thing the weather is so nice! We opened up all the windows and have a nice breeze blowing through.

October 3, 1997

Denise is off getting her hair done and I just installed Internet Explorer 4.0! Time will tell if this is the best thing since sliced bread, but the experience so far is great! It opened a channel to Disney and another to Warner Brothers, both incredible sites with great sound effects.

We will be going off in the boat when Denise gets back to spend the night offshore, the weather is great for that!

Well, we worked around the house, cleaning, fixing, changing things, etc., too long! The tide went out and we cannot get out!! Another time, I guess. Denise has to work tomorrow and we would have had to come back early anyway.
