The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Province_of_Massachusetts_Bay\">Province of Massachusetts Bay<\/a>&nbsp;passed a law which provided attainder for &#8220;conjuration, witchcraft, and dealing with evil and wicked spirits&#8221;, which meant the loss of civil, inheritance, and property rights of those accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-ce8347fe-1d63-40af-a824-95611e5d7385\">William Baker Jr., 14 years old, accused Samuel, Sarah, and their 19-year-old daughter Mercy Wardwell of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Witchcraft\">witchcraft<\/a>. All three confessed the very day they were interrogated. Similar to many accusations, William Baker Jr may have accused them to get their 188 acre farm on the cheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-afc3c1d2-d699-4d57-b3c5-430aa99d06ef\">Samuel was executed at Proctor&#8217;s Ledge in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salem,_Massachusetts\">Salem<\/a>&nbsp;after retracting a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forced_confession\">forced confession<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Wardwell#cite_note-stay-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Eventually his widow, Sarah Wardwell, was reprieved and released.
