Pam Bondi

As U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi has faced several investigations and legal challenges during her first year in office in 2025.

  1. Ethics complaints
    • Multiple ethics complaints were filed against Bondi with the Florida Bar by dozens of attorneys, professors, and retired judges, alleging “serious professional misconduct” and abuse of power.
    • What was alleged: The complaints accused Bondi of improperly firing or coercing the resignations of numerous Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers to advance President Trump’s political objectives.
    • Bar’s response: The Florida Bar rejected the complaints, stating it “does not investigate or prosecute sitting officers appointed under the U.S. Constitution while they are in office”.
    • Florida Supreme Court ruling: The court denied a petition to force the Florida Bar to investigate, with the brief order stating that the petitioner “failed to show a clear legal right to the relief requested”.
  2. Congressional scrutiny
    • During an October 2025 oversight hearing before the Senate Judiciary

Committee, Bondi was repeatedly questioned by Democrats about the politicization of the DOJ.
      • Key topics included: The indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, the legal rationale for using the National Guard in U.S. cities, and the handling of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
      • Bondi’s response: She largely deflected questions and accused Democrats of political attacks.
  3.  Epstein files
    1. Bondi and her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files have also drawn scrutiny from both Democrats and some Republicans.
    • Key developments:
    • In February 2025, the DOJ released over 100 pages of documents, including flight logs and contact lists, prompting Bondi to call for an investigation into why more files had not been released previously.
    • In a July memo, the DOJ and FBI stated the files did not contain a “client list” or evidence that Epstein was murdered.
    • Some Republican lawmakers have pushed for an unredacted release of all documents.

Lawsuits against the Justice Department

Several lawsuits have been filed against the DOJ while Bondi has been attorney general.
  • Lawsuit over grant cancellations: In May 2025, organizations sued the DOJ to reverse the termination of hundreds of public safety grants, which many stated had caused layoffs and program closures.
  • D.C. lawsuit: The District of Columbia sued Bondi and the Trump administration over a federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department in August 2025.
